Our approach to preparing today’s workforce and the next generation of cyber defenders must change with it.
The Threat Is No Longer Hypothetical
Not long ago, many cybersecurity scenarios felt like worst-case planning exercises.
Today, they are headlines.
Nation-state actors are targeting critical infrastructure. Criminal organizations are disrupting hospitals, manufacturers, and local governments with ransomware. Artificial intelligence is giving attackers the ability to move faster than ever before.
In June 2026, the Five Eyes intelligence alliance issued a rare joint warning that frontier AI models are expected to significantly increase offensive cyber capabilities within months, not years. Their message was clear. Organizations can no longer afford to think of cyber threats as tomorrow’s problem.
The future is already here.
Cyber is no longer confined to computers.
It has become part of modern conflict, economic competition, and national resilience.
America’s Critical Infrastructure Is on the Front Line
Global tensions have reshaped the cyber battlefield.
Today’s conflicts increasingly begin in cyberspace, where attacks against critical infrastructure can disrupt essential services long before traditional military action occurs.
Operational Technology, or OT, has become one of the most attractive targets.
Unlike traditional IT systems, OT environments control physical operations. They keep factories producing, airports operating, water flowing, and power grids running.
A successful attack does not simply expose sensitive information.
It can interrupt manufacturing, delay transportation, impact public safety, or disrupt services entire communities depend on.
As organizations continue connecting industrial control systems with enterprise networks, cloud platforms, and remote operations, the attack surface continues to expand.
According to the 2026 Dragos OT Cybersecurity Year in Review, only 30 percent of OT networks have sufficient visibility into their environments. Fifty-six percent cannot effectively monitor activity below the IT and OT boundary, and 88 percent report challenges detecting and responding to threats. Dragos also identified 26 active threat groups targeting industrial organizations and reported more than 3,300 industrial organizations impacted by ransomware.
These are not simply cybersecurity challenges.
They are operational resilience challenges.

AI Has Changed the Speed of Cybersecurity
Artificial intelligence is transforming cybersecurity on both sides of the battlefield.
Defenders are using AI to detect threats faster, automate analysis, and improve response times.
Attackers are using it to automate reconnaissance, generate convincing phishing campaigns, identify vulnerabilities, and accelerate exploitation.
According to CrowdStrike’s 2026 Global Threat Report, attacks by AI-enabled adversaries increased 89 percent over the previous year. The average breakout time, the amount of time it takes an attacker to move laterally after gaining initial access, dropped to just 29 minutes. The fastest recorded breakout took only 27 seconds.
That is an incredible shift.
When attacks move at machine speed, defenders must be prepared to respond at machine speed.
The pace of cyber has changed.
Training must evolve to keep up.
Experience Matters More Than Ever
Technology alone will not solve this challenge.
People will.
Yet while cyber threats continue to evolve, the cybersecurity workforce continues to face a significant shortage. According to ISC2, the global cybersecurity workforce gap is approximately 4.8 million professionals.
The challenge is not simply producing more cybersecurity professionals.
It is preparing professionals who are ready for the environments they will defend.
Reading about an OT attack is not the same as responding to one.
Learning industrial protocols in a classroom is not the same as troubleshooting them under pressure.
Watching a ransomware simulation is not the same as defending a live environment.
The next generation of cyber defenders must learn by doing.

Realistic Training Builds Real Readiness
Pilots train in flight simulators.
Military personnel train through realistic exercises.
Emergency responders prepare in live scenarios.
Cybersecurity should be no different.
As threats become more sophisticated, cybersecurity education must move beyond lectures and lab exercises. Professionals need opportunities to experience realistic attacks, make decisions under pressure, understand operational consequences, and collaborate as they would during a real incident.
Hands-on cyber ranges bridge the gap between theory and practice.
They allow students, military personnel, government agencies, and industry professionals to safely train in environments that mirror the systems they will ultimately defend.
This type of experiential learning builds technical skills.
More importantly, it builds confidence, decision-making, teamwork, and operational readiness.
Those qualities cannot be developed through theory alone.
Preparing for What’s Next
The cyber landscape will continue to evolve.
Artificial intelligence will become more capable.
Operational Technology will become more connected.
Nation-state adversaries will continue looking for opportunities to disrupt critical infrastructure.
The question is not whether the threats will continue to change.
They will.
The question is whether our workforce will evolve quickly enough to meet them.
Preparing tomorrow’s cyber defenders means giving them the opportunity to solve tomorrow’s problems today.
It means investing in realistic training environments that mirror modern threats, encourage critical thinking, and develop experience before real-world consequences are on the line.
Because what was once theoretical is now reality.
